Champion Rights of Aboriginal children and young people in SA

About the Opportunity

This is a rare and impactful opportunity to advocate for the rights, cultural identity, safety, and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and young people in South Australia. As the Commissioner, you will collaborate with communities, government agencies, and key stakeholders to lead systemic advocacy and change. The role will shape policies and practices that ensure the voices of Aboriginal children and young people are heard and valued.

Key Duties

  • Advocate for policies promoting cultural identity and wellbeing, specifically in the areas of education, health, child protection and justice. 

  • Establish mechanisms for meaningful engagement with Aboriginal children and communities.

  •  Publish reports on matters related to the rights, development, cultural identity, safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children and young people on a systemic level. 

  • Influence and promote the participation of Aboriginal children and young people in the making of decisions and policy that affect their lives. 

  • Investigate and resolve systemic issues impacting Aboriginal children and young people.

 

About You

We are looking for an inspiring and innovative executive with experience working with children and the drive to make positive and meaningful change. You will have the ability to authentically engage and listen to children and young people with proven experience advocating and having impact at the highest level. To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Be an Aboriginal person with deep cultural knowledge and understanding.

  • Have extensive experience advocating for Aboriginal children and young people.

  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Be committed to principles of social justice, human rights, and cultural safety.

  • Possess a strong understanding of systemic issues in South Australia impacting Aboriginal communities.

 

Special Conditions

• Must meet the legal definition of an Aboriginal person.

• Frequent travel and out-of-hours work required.

• Working with Children Clearance and RAN Training mandatory.
