The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) is a key economic development agency in the government of South Australia.

Their aim is to advance the prosperity and sustainability of South Australia’s primary industries and the liveability of regional communities.

In collaboration with Aboriginal people, the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) aims to build tangible, enduring change and equity for Aboriginal people and communities in South Australia.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an Aboriginal Engagement Officer to support the execution of PIRSA's diversity strategy and initiatives, including our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) (at innovate stage) and our Closing the Gap programs. This is a 3 year contract term role.

In this role you will work with the General Manager of Aboriginal Engagement in the First Nations Delivery Unit to enhance the participation of Aboriginal Peoples in Primary Industries, Food and Wine sectors in South Australia so that the lives of Aboriginal people in South Australia can improve in cultural, social and economic aspects.

In this role, you will focus on the development of reconciliation and community engagement across the organisation to ensure we are collaborating effectively with local Aboriginal communities and maintaining strong relationships with Traditional Owners and stakeholders in South Australia.

 

Key areas of responsibility include:

· Developing and implementing programs relating to Aboriginal engagement

· Contributing to the development and reporting of the RAP and Closing the Gap strategies and their implementation

· Advising on the development and implementation of PIRSA Aboriginal policies

· Fostering strong working relationships to encourage and increase Aboriginal engagement

· Establishing good relationships with Aboriginal stakeholders, organisations, institutions, and communities

 

About You

 

To be successful in this role, you will need to have a proven track record in project support and management, including good writing and reporting skills. We are also looking for a high level of understanding and awareness of Aboriginal people and groups across all of South Australia, including their cultures and challenges. You will be a high performer who has exceptional communication skills and a proven track record managing all levels of stakeholders.

 

Ideally we are looking for:

 

● Experience working in a similar role with supporting projects that support improved Aboriginal engagement 
● Experience working on policy and programs in line with First Nations and Closing the Gap
● Strong knowledge, understanding and demonstrated experience in ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with First Nations People

 

This role is for someone who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander OR someone who can demonstrate extensive experience in a similar role with a connection to First Nations Communities.
